All about the 8 Days Lemosho Route.
About Lemosho Route
The Lemosho route is one of the newer routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. The route begins in the west and rather than simply intersecting Shira Plateau (like Machame), Lemosho crosses it from Shira Ridge to Shira Camp. Climbers encounter low traffic until the route joins the Machame route. Afterwards, Lemosho follows the same route through Lava Tower, Barranco and Barafu, known as the southern circuit. The minimum number of days required for this route is six days, although eight days is ideal.Lemosho is considered the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro and grants panoramic vistas on various sides of the mountain. It is our favorite route because it offers a great balance of low traffic, scenic views and a high summit success rate. Thus, Lemosho comes highly recommended. Most of our clients use Lemosho.

This camp gives you  opportunity to enjoy the first view of Kibo, a breathtaking scenery by looking across the plateau.

    • Distance: 11 km/ 7 miles
    • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
    • Habitat: Heath

You should use this day for exploring the Shira Plateau ( One of the highest plateaus on Earth ), by taking a nice stroll on the East side of the moorland toward  Shira 2 Camp. We will divert from the trail and branch out towards Moir Hut, a barely used camp that lies at the base of Lent Hills. Various hikes are available on Lent Hills, which will make the walk perfect acclimatization opportunity.

  4. Day 4 Moir Hut to Lava Tower / Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

This day will begin with a hike up a ridge, followint the path southeast to Lava Tower, a 300ft tall volcanic rock formation. From here, we have gentle descent to Barranco camp, a walk through the spectacular Seneca Forest to an altitude of 13,000ft. Although the day begins and ends at the same elevation, this day is perfect for your acclimatization.

  5. Day 5 Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
    • Elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,106 ft
    • Distance: 5 km/3 miles
    • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
    • Habitat: Alpine Desert

The day begins with descending into a pass leading to the base of the Great Barranco Wall. Next to follow is the non-technical but very steep climb on a almost 900ft tall cliff. Once at the top of the Barranco Wall, our path leads over range of hills and valleys until final and pretty sharp descend to Karanga Valley. Here we have one final steep climb taking us to Karanga Camp. This day does not include much hiking, but it is precious for your acclimatization.

  6. Day 6 Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
    • Elevation: 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft
    • Distance: 4 km/2 miles
    • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
    • Habitat: Alpine Desert

We’ll leave Karanga valley and merge with the Mweka trail that leads to the rockier section toward Barafu Hut. Barafu is a point where you will complete the Southern circuit, but also location from where you will have spectacular views of the summit from various angles. Our crew will set up camp, and you should rest while enjoying the magnificent views, in preparation for summit day. The magnificent Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are also visible from this point.

  7. Day 7 Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak / Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
    • Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft
    • Distance: 5 km/3 miles
    • Hiking Time: 7-8 hours

    • Elevation: 19,341 ft to 10,065 ft
    • Distance: 12 km/7 miles
    • Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
    • Habitat: Rain Forest

You will get up very early, around midnight, followed by the summit attempt. This portion of the hike is the most mentally and physically challenging, because the temperatures and the winds at this elevation can be severe. We’ll continue to ascend while still dark for several hours, but you will also have short but frequent breaks. Close to Stella Point (18,900ft) you will be able to enjoy the sunrise coming over Mawenzi peak, like of which you will not find anywhere else. From here, we’ll finally reach Uhuru Peak – the Roof of Africa and the highest point on Kilimanjaro and all of Africa.

After short break at the top for taking pictures, we’ll begin descent toward Mweka Hut Campsite, with a stopover at Barafu Hut for lunch. The rocky trail can be hard on the knees, so the trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is located at the upper forest, so the mist or rain are pretty common in the late afternoon. The last dinner on the mountain will be served here, with opportunity for well-deserved sleep.

  8. Day 8 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
    • Elevation: 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft
    • Distance: 10 km/6 miles
    • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
    • Habitat: Rain Forest

Today we’ll continue with descent to Mweka Gate, where the summit certificates will be issued. It can be muddy and wet at lower elevations, as we resume for another hour toward Mweka Village, where a vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Moshi.
